PFATS and PFATS Foundation are proud to provide a variety of scholarships and internships to athletic training students and graduates. From doctoral research grants to undergraduate and graduate scholarships, investing in the future of the athletic training profession is a cornerstone of the PFATS organization

Ethnic Minority Scholarship Program

Since 1993, PFATS and the NFL Foundation have worked together to sponsor annual scholarships for ethnic minority students. The scholarship program is open to undergraduate and graduate ethnic minority athletic training students who possess a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale. This program awards 32 scholarships at $1000 per award – totaling $32,000. In addition to receiving a financial grant, each student selected will have the opportunity to work at an NFL summer training camp.

Female Scholarship Program

Along with the ethnic minority scholarship program, since 2015, PFATS and the NFL Foundation also offer annual scholarships to female athletic training students interested in pursuing a career in the NFL. The scholarship program is open to undergraduate and graduate female athletic training students who possess a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale. This program awards 32 scholarships at $1000 per award – totaling $32,000. Seasonal Internships

Internships vary throughout the NFL and typically one to two seasonal internships are available per team. Applicants can apply in the Fall for open positions for each team. The majority of NFL teams require that seasonal internship applicants are certified athletic trainers and have either graduated from an accredited undergraduate or graduate Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). They often start in the spring and extend through the end of the NFL season.

A seasonal intern’s role will vary from team to team, but they are typically involved with duties on a daily basis, continually demonstrating the ability to serve as a productive member of the athletic training staff. As seasonal interns progress, they gain more responsibilities relative to field setup and breakdown for practice and game days, taping duties and stretching responsibilities. They may help with rehabilitation protocols, provide support during practice and pack and prepare trunks for away games. Mentoring and teaching in relation to football experience is also common.

Training Camp/Summer Internships

Current students who are enrolled in an accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) can apply in the Fall for open positions for each team, which will begin in the Summer. Teams rely heavily on summer/training camp interns for coverage of the larger number of players present. Interns can expect to be exposed to a variety of rotating responsibilities each week, including field setup and breakdown for practice, taping and rehab to get them involved in different aspects of training camp.
